Drama is an excellent subject for developing communication skills, creativity and imagination. Students are encouraged to be inquisitive, analyse and question the world around us and foster a sense of pride in their creative abilities. Drama not only to enriches students’ knowledge of theatrical styles and conventions and culture, but also develops the essential skills required for life and the world of work.

Drama encourages connection, teamwork, creativity and imagination. It allows students to develop empathy, compassion and a sense of responsibility to their peers; see different perspectives and raises moral questions to be considered through a practical exploration of contemporary issues.

The drama department provides a safe, inclusive environment for students to learn in a fun, imaginative way regardless of their ability. They engage in group activities where we promote inclusivity and teamwork, problem solving together and in doing so are taught to respect the opinions of others. A variety of stimuli is used to engage all students and they are taught to evaluate the work of their peers in a constructive manner.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to enable students to develop a range of skills, such as devising, physical theatre, script work and performance.  At Key Stage 3, these are delivered through a range of units and contexts, encouraging pupils to develop not only their drama specific skillset, but also their empathy, compassion, maturity and understanding of the world around them.

At Key Stage 4, students develop these skills further through performance and analysis of live theatre, considering themes within plays and how these are conveyed throughout.

The growing independence, confidence and competency of dramatists at the end of their BTEC course means they are ready to embark on further study of drama through BTEC Level 3 or A Level.

Students are taught respect for others within the group work we do and within the performance and evaluation of the work of others. Within our Programme of Study (POS) we engage students in thought provoking topics that promote tolerance and respect for others and also allows them to build their own self-respect and self-esteem. The routines and practices within the subject set a high standard for behaviour.

Students are assessed on their practical knowledge and application of skills in both the process and performance. They are also assessed on their knowledge of the subject.

Our Drama Curriculum aims not only to enrich students’ knowledge of theatrical styles and conventions and culture. They will learn about different theatre practitioners and how they changed face of theatre. Students will also be enriched with the experience of participating in workshops with visiting practitioners and be given the opportunity to develop their passion for drama through extra-curricular performances.

Drama can lead to further study at Level 3 (A Level or BTEC) and degree level in Drama, Theatre Studies or Performing Arts.  Drama equips students with a wide variety of skills which would be advantageous in many areas of employment.  More Drama specific career opportunities may include:
