Transition from Year 6 to Year 7 at Our Secondary School

One of the biggest challenges that any student faces during their academic career is the transfer from primary to secondary school  and we are committed to making this process as seamless and supportive as possible.

We take pride in our comprehensive transition programme, aimed at helping students settle into their new environment quickly and confidently. This includes:

  • Close Collaboration with Feeder Primary Schools: We maintain strong relationships with our feeder primary schools to ensure a smooth handover of relevant academic and pastoral information. Once our Year 7 places are allocated our Transition Team work with your child’s Primary School and Year 6 teachers to gather as much information as possible to help us get to know your child as best as possible and ensure a confident start to life as am Alsop High School student. This includes academic information, students who your child works well with, details of hobbies, interests and talents, as well as any pastoral, safeguarding or SEND information which we need to be aware of to best support your child

  • Student Visits: New students are invited to visit our school in July during our transition days which allows them to familiarise themselves with the school, facilities, and some of the key staff members who will l be there to support them to ensure they are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities presented in Year 7.

  • Parents Information Evening: We provide detailed induction sessions for both students and their families to help them get acquainted with our school’s routines, ethos, and expectations. This evening gives parents and carers the opportunity to meet with Form Tutors and Year Team Lead, whilst also meeting the Headteacher, Senior Leadership Team and our SENDCo.

  • Key Contact: To alleviate any concerns in advance, parents/carers can contact our dedicated Transition Team to discuss any concerns or queries via our dedicated transition which wil be update each year.

Key Transition Events

To further support the transition, we have organised several key events:

  • Transition Days: These are held in early July, where new Year 7 students spend two days at our school. During these days, they meet their Form Tutors, make new friends, and start to get a feel for secondary school life.

  • Parents Information Evening: On the evening of the second Transition Day, we host a session for parents and carers to meet the Form Tutors, Year Team, and Senior Leadership Team. This evening provides essential information about the school and offers an opportunity to ask any questions.

Preparing for Year 7

To help us get to know your child and support them effectively, we request that parents/carers complete the following:

  • Year 6 Admissions and Data Collection Form: This form collects essential information about your child, which will be shared with their Head of Year and Form Tutor.

  • Year 6 Student Passport: This document helps us understand your child’s interests, strengths, and any specific support they may need.

Additional Support

We offer a range of workshops for Year 6 parents and carers, covering topics such as:

  • SEND Support

  • Mental Health and Wellbeing

  • Online Safety and Social Media

  • Supporting Literacy and Numeracy

These workshops are designed to provide valuable guidance and support to help your child thrive in secondary school.
