Alsop High School welcomed David Morrissey, the accomplished actor and director for stage and screen. The visit was arranged in partnership with the Speakers for Schools programme.

Students at Alsop were privileged to meet David Morrissey and hear an inspirational talk about his career as an actor and film director. David Morrissey is best known for playing critically acclaimed roles in TV series, such as ‘Sense and Sensibility’, ‘Walking Dead’ and ‘State of Play’. He has also written, directed and produced a few short films and television films.

David spoke about growing up in north Liverpool and his passion for drama. Fascinated by the art of acting, David first performed on stage at the age of 11. It was for a school production of the play ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’. One of his teachers, Miss Kelly, was the first one to recognize his acting talent, encouraged him to be confident on stage.

He then began his career performing at the Everyman Youth Theatre, Liverpool. He has since gone on to win the RTS Best Actor award for his portrayal of Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, in the 2003 film The Deal, as well as starring in the BAFTA-nominated State of Play. David worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre for many years. David is also well known for appearing in films such as: Jackie, The Other Boleyn Girl and Hilary.

During his motivational talk David spoke about the importance of the Creative Arts and gave advice with top tips for young people wishing to pursue a career in acting and the film industry.

David then answered questions from students. He told students to aim high and pursue their passion. As a young man he never gave up until he realised his dream of becoming an actor. On the third attempt he gained a place at RADA and studied alongside others from similar backgrounds.

Mr Paul Masher, headteacher, writes:
“It was a great pleasure to welcome David Morrissey to Alsop. David’s message was so inspiring for our students, with stories of growing up in Liverpool, his determination to become a leading actor and how to go out and find the opportunities to fulfil your dreams; he made such a big impression on our young people. I’m sure his motivational and inspirational message will raise the aspirations of many of those present and inspire them to achieve excellence. Thank you David for giving up your time to visit Alsop.“
